In her multimedia project, Solitude, first-year BA student Beatrice Borra takes us on an introspective journey into the aesthetics of isolation and the quiet strength found in stillness. She invites us into a deeply personal exploration of space and the emotional nuances of being alone. The project reflects on solitude not as absence, but as presence.
Visually, Solitude is composed of carefully curated imagery that evokes intimacy, tension and quiet resolve. Through styling, staging and subtle performance, she crafts a visual narrative that challenges the notion of isolation as emptiness, presenting it instead as a powerful, generative state.
Capturing Energy and Creating Identity
The digital format of Readymag allowed Beatrice not only to enhance the emotional resonance of Solitude, but also to enable audiences to engage with the project through a self-paced, immersive experience. Layered with text, images and interactive elements, the presentation captures the fragmented yet fluid nature of contemporary identity and emotion.
Using Readymag, Beatrice visualised the feeling of isolation one often experiences living in a city, incorporating images that represent moments of loneliness. “I wanted to report on the fast-paced lifestyle [of London], and how it can [be] overwhelming, yet so exciting and inspiring. In big cities like this, people end up being extremely lonely and engulfed by the city itself.”
