Why did you decide to enroll in Vogue Online Essentials?

I decided to enroll in Vogue Online Essentials because I thought it was a great opportunity to delve deeper into the fashion industry and expand my skillset. I’ve grown up respecting and loving Vogue, and once I found an accessible program that catered to what I want to do in life, I excitedly jumped right in.

Which course(s) did you enroll in and why?

I enrolled in the Fashion Media Essentials course because it catered to my interest in fashion media and provided valuable experience in the fashion industry. Whether it’s content creation through digital media, writing/editing or marketing, I always found myself gravitating to the creative aspects of fashion communication. Fashion media is a space where you can innovatively influence the trajectory of the fashion industry through visuals, personal narratives and cultural stories rendered from clothing, beauty and fashion culture.

What was your experience like participating in the course?

I had a great experience during the 4-week course. The weekly topics were well dispersed, each assignment was very thorough yet fun and there were a lot of opportunities to explore my creativity through a variety of projects. Clear directions were provided for each topic, but autonomy allowed for individuality and creative expression. I loved that the course was asynchronous because I was able to learn and complete assignments on my timeline while juggling other responsibilities.

Can you share an example of an assignment that you particularly enjoyed?

Outside of the final cover project, one assignment that I particularly enjoyed was a task called “Creating A Still-Life Image”. The assignment was to produce a still-life image using any items of your choice.

I set aside a day to complete it, rummaging through my room and closet, searching for an item that I could garner a story from. I picked up my cream-colored Marc Jacobs J Marc shoulder bag and started thinking. The dynamic rectangular shape reminded me of a bag of sugar sitting upright on my pantry shelf. They were similar to each other, each shape the same and geometrically aligned. I hauled my Canon camera over, all the settings set to my preferred photo style, and shot several images of them beside one another. My aim was to depict the “sweetness” and “cool girl energy” of the bag by utilising the art of storytelling and photographing items around my house. I liked that the project allowed me to take creative liberties and gave me the opportunity to explore a real-life industry job firsthand.

How did you interact with your classmates and instructor during the course? What was that like?

Interaction was constant throughout the course. I was able to connect with my peers for each task by commenting and conversing with them on a discussion board. The discussion board was a great way to connect with other people that shared my love for fashion and pop culture, and to discuss our project tasks. It set a welcoming environment where everyone could put forth their best ideas and celebrate each other’s innovations. I was also given the opportunity to speak with my instructor for individual questions or anything related to the course, and she provided valuable feedback.

How did your experience in Vogue Online Essentials influence your perspective on your future studies or career path?

My experience with Vogue Online Essentials has been immensely eye-opening. Having taken this course, I have a deeper understanding of how the fashion industry works and presents itself in daily life. I plan to study fashion media and merchandising or textiles in college and go on to work in fashion.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about enrolling in Vogue Online Essentials?

My advice for anyone thinking about joining this course is: absolutely do it. You’ll gain many valuable skills that can be applied towards beginning your journey in fashion. You’ll also have a chance to collaborate with industry professionals and peers in class. Every project or assignment focuses on skill development while remaining equally fun and enjoyable. All this to say, I recommend Vogue Online Essentials to anyone just beginning to explore the world of fashion or to those who are serious about developing a fashion career.
