New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2025

The runways featured a mix of minimalist designs and bold, voluminous silhouettes. “American fashion has always been rooted in practicality, but Fall/Winter 2025 showed that practicality doesn’t have to be predictable,” says Johannes Reponen, Global Academic Director at Vogue College of Fashion. “From reimagined outerwear to elevated basics, designers focused on longevity and innovation.” Here are a few key trends from this season’s shows:

Oversized Tailoring

The ’80s influence was evident as designers embraced oversized suits featuring broad shoulders and relaxed fits. This revival of power dressing was notably seen in Calvin Klein’s collection, where expansive blazers were paired with wide-leg trousers for minimalist and sophisticated looks. Carolina Herrera also presented tailored ensembles with exaggerated proportions, blending elegance with assertiveness.

Voluminous Skirts

Full, A-line skirts added drama and movement to the collections. Altuzarra showcased voluminous skirts paired with fitted tops, creating a balance between structure and fluidity. Ulla Johnson incorporated flowing skirts with intricate patterns, emphasizing romance in her collection.

Cropped Jackets

Shortened blazers and jackets emerged as versatile layering pieces. Tory Burchs collection featured cropped jackets in neutral tones, paired with high-waisted skirts and trousers for a polished look. Khaite offered a modern take with cropped leather jackets, adding an edge to classic ensembles.

Protective Outerwear

Designers prioritized comfort and protection, presenting oversized coats and plush fabrics. Prabal Gurung‘s runway featured larger-than-life fur coats that combined luxury with functionality. Collina Strada emphasized sustainability by showcasing padded coats made from recycled materials.

Return of Real Fur

In a controversial move, real fur made a notable return on several runways. Altuzarra incorporated fur elements into luxurious outerwear pieces, while Kim Shui utilized fur accents to add texture and depth to her designs.

London Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2025

London Fashion Week showcased a mix of tradition and innovation, with designers experimenting with sheer layering, rich textures, and sculptural silhouettes. “London’s designers have always been known for their fearless approach, and Fall/Winter 2025 was no exception. Whether it was Jawara Alleyne’s deconstructed tailoring or Richard Quinn’s dramatic silhouettes, there was an undeniable energy of reinvention on the runway,” says Reponen. From Burberry’s nod to British heritage to Simone Rocha’s delicate interplay of satin and leather, here are some trends that stood out:

Sheer Layering and Transparency

Designers played with transparency, layering gauzy materials over structured garments to create depth and movement. Simone Rocha led this trend with delicate, sheer overlays on dresses, while Supriya Lele incorporated translucent panels into sleek tailoring.

Leather Dominance

Leather remained a defining element across multiple collections, appearing in various forms, from oversized outerwear to fitted dresses. Simone Rocha incorporated leather into voluminous silhouettes, blending its toughness with her signature romantic aesthetic. Burberry’s collection featured structured leather trench coats in deep, rich hues, reinforcing the fabric’s timeless versatility.

Prints and Texture Play

Pattern and texture played a major role on the London runways, with designers layering contrasting materials and bold prints. Bora Aksu and Sinead Gorey embraced a variety of fabrics and patterns, combining polka dots, tartan, and faux fur for visually dynamic ensembles. Textured fabrics such as wool, velvet, and crushed satin added depth to structured pieces.

Draped and Deconstructed Silhouettes

A shift toward fluidity and asymmetry was evident in the collections of up-and-coming designers. Jawara Alleyne experimented with deconstructed tailoring, using slashed fabrics and asymmetric hems to challenge conventional shapes. Dresses and coats featured artfully draped panels, adding an element of effortless movement to the structured garments.

Statement Sleeves and Layering

Exaggerated sleeves made a bold impact, with ballooned, ruched, and sculptural forms enhancing everything from outerwear to delicate blouses. Tiers of fabric and unexpected layering techniques made for theatrical ensembles, as seen in Richard Quinn’s voluminous gowns and Bora Aksu’s dramatic sleeve detailing.
