The Rise of AI in the Creative Industries
Fresh from graduating from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, I arrived in London eager to dive deeper into fashion’s inner workings. My destination? Vogue College of Fashion—arguably the ultimate institution of real-world fashion expertise, past and present. Among the many emerging trends we explored, one topic loomed large: artificial intelligence.
For creatives, AI can feel both exhilarating and unnerving. Yet as indispensable as it has become, nothing replaces the magic of a slower, analogue process—intimate, alive and deeply human—a discovery I didn’t expect to treasure as much as I did during this course.
A Truly International Experience
If there is one word that captures my week at Vogue College, it’s “international.” London’s diversity is legendary, yet I feared being from Texas might have alienated me amongst mostly local peers. Instead, I found myself laughing and learning alongside students and educators from every corner of the globe. Each person brought unique perspectives on storytelling and strategy. Between dissecting iconic campaigns or laughing over lunch, we wove a rich tapestry of cultures, passions and inspirations.
The program’s expansive reach reminded me that we have the privilege to turn strangers into familiar faces. It was an important reminder during a time when we’re often tempted to abandon the instinctual sense of community that comes with embracing and romanticising humanity. We need to remember the unspoken languages that bind us all. Together, we rediscovered childlike wonder and spontaneous play—those timeless impulses that break down barriers and remind us of our inspirations in a world where we are destined to create.

Why Human Creativity Still Reigns
Yes, AI is powerful, but it requires human stewardship to reach its full potential. More importantly, no algorithm can match the spark that ignites when multiple minds converge. Inspired by the nostalgia for human connection, I used my brand collaboration project to reimagine the humble jump rope as a vessel to reignite our sense of childlike wonder. This collaboration pushes back against isolated “new normals” and honors the serendipity of pure exchange. Block parties and a stronger sense of community became the bedrock: neighbors spilling into sunlit streets, chalk dust swirling underfoot and rhythms of jump ropes echoing through the air.

Slowing Down as a Creative Act
In an age that values efficiency above all, we hold the privilege to pause, introduce yourself to the stranger sitting beside you, gather your neighbors and create lasting memories. Vogue’s 5 Days of Creative Direction course illuminated a powerful truth: our role as creators is not merely to produce, but to remind others of their free will, their capacity for spontaneous joy and the enduring magic of being present. I depart London with a fuller moodboard, a sharper eye and an unshakeable conviction that even as AI reshapes our industry, the heart of fashion will always beat in analogue rhythms.
