Can you share some background on yourself and your current studies or role?
I’m a journalism student at the University of Victoria in BC, Canada. I’m working towards a career in pop culture, religion and fashion writing – a diverse combination, I do realize! Outside of course work, I write for an online magazine called Her Campus and teach dance classes.
What made you choose Vogue College of Fashion for your studies?
The appeal of Vogue Summer Program: Fashion Media was the opportunity to understand the workings of the Vogue magazine workroom and the Vogue brand itself. It’s not common to find a program where you can experience real magazine jobs before actually being in them. Getting to learn about roles outside of writing–everything from street photography, styling, posing, hair and makeup direction, graphic design and editorial roles–expanded my understanding and appreciation of the industry and equipped me with a lot of new skills.
Vogue‘s timeless appeal and icon status was also something I wanted to study. Across all publications, the brand’s commitment to a specific editorial lens is vital to creating and keeping a dedicated readership, and that is something I believe that Vogue has mastered.

What were the most valuable skills you gained during the program?
While I certainly learned a lot about fashion and left inspired by the industry, the greatest skillset I acquired was that of the editor. I was the editor of my group, marking my first time in that role. Planning, delegating roles based on skill and preference, managing opinions and ideas, creating a cohesive project and applying feedback are just some of the skills I got to refine in this role.
Describe your favorite day of the program. Where did you go, who did you meet?
This is a tough one; they were all so fun! The one I keep coming back to is the trip to the British Vogue headquarters. We met so many amazing staff and witnessed their exuding passion for their jobs.
What was your day-to-day experience like?
I felt like a true Londoner going to college everyday, riding the Tube or the double-decker bus! Class times varied by day, but there was always time for a lunch run to Gail’s Bakery. Classes leaned toward lecture-style and often incorporated time to work as a group and get expert feedback. There were definitely plenty of opportunities to explore London during the evenings and weekends, which inspired the coursework.

How has the program contributed to your growth, either professionally or academically?
I’m very grateful to have sharpened my editorial eye and gained an abundance of fashion-related context, knowledge and inspiration. I feel more confident in my team management skills and my ability to work confidently in abstract environments. I can’t leave out the brilliant process of creating concepts from moodboards into end products. This was a new skill for me but one I will continue to apply in my studies and career.
