Finding Confidence Without Experience

I walked through the doors of Vogue College of Fashion with no experience in the fashion industry but with an excitement for the subject and dedication to learn as much as I could from these few days. This lack of experience did not set me apart from the others, but welcomed me to feel inspired by my lecturers and coursemates who came from a wide range of different backgrounds and all had different experiences, some similar to mine.

The Friendships That Surprised Me

During the welcome talk for Vogue College of Fashion’s 5 Days of Creative Direction, we were told about the importance of the friendships we would make during this time. With only five days, I didn’t believe that the bonds I would make would be so impactful. This was not the ‘Devil Wears Prada’ environment often expected in the world of fashion. Instead, it was a place where you were supported entirely by your peers and pushed by your lecturers to trust yourself entirely.

Building A Brand: The Miu Miu Project

During the week, we were tasked with choosing a luxury brand from a carefully selected list and asked to create a concept for a collaboration with ourselves. I chose the Italian brand Miu Miu. Although initially this seemed like an intimidating task, we were supported throughout. Each day offered a fun and insightful build-up to our final presentation.

My end concept involved going back to the beginning of Miu Miu and reminiscing about its first collection. This concept involved a western-inspired pop-up in the city to promote and sell the musky perfume I invented. The event featured a dandelion tea linked with my personal brand and a campaign poster I designed during our photography workshop around Bedford Square. The perfume was sold in Miu Miu-style denim mini bags inspired by the brand’s reputation for upcycling and re-fashion. Scared that my idea was too expensive for the consumer and outside the box, when discussing my concept with my lecturers they did not limit me but allowed me to be innovative and limitless with my ideas.

Discovering New Possibilities

There were so many highlights from such a short amount of time. One of my favourite moments was our trip to the RSA where we had talks from a wide range of guests who worked in different parts of Condé Nast. During these couple of hours, as I sat in this beautiful hall, I was able to envision all of my possible future career paths within the roles being discussed. I was told about roles that I didn’t know existed and was introduced to a career I never would have imagined myself in but now, would love the opportunity to explore.
